Year 1 (classes 5 and 6) - 2020/21

This week we have continued with our learning about Wolf Kahn. We used oil pastels to create the back ground of our landscape pictures. We decided on the colour we would like to include in our pictures and used a paper towel to blend them together.

In maths we have been looking at number bonds to 10 and 20. We used dienes, and tens frames with counters to help us remember our number bonds. We then wrote our bonds as a number sentence.

On Monday when we came into class we noticed Mr Ted had disappeared. We couldn’t find him in the classroom but then we discovered a postcard. Mr Ted has been on an adventure exploring different landmarks in the North East. This week went to The Angel of the North. We have been learning lots of facts about The angel of the North. We have been looking at different non-fiction books about the North East and deciding if a statement is fact or opinion. We will be writing a diary entry for Mr Ted all about his trip to The Angel of the North.

This term we will be learning about a new artist called Wolf Kahn. This week we looked at different pieces of his art work. We discussed what we like about each picture and which one was our favourite. We talked about how we think he created each picture before exploring with some oil pastels. We can’t wait to create our own pieces of art work like Wolf Kahn.

In maths we have been looking at numbers to 100. We have practiced counting forwards and backwards. This week we have been ordering numbers to 100. We used the tens to decide which the biggest and smallest numbers was. Some of the numbers tricked us and had the same tens, so we realised we need to use the ones to help us too.

Last half term, we read the story Little Red Riding Hood. We discussed why she was into the forest and what type of character she was. We thought about what we would put into our picnic basket if we were going on a picnic. We decided that we needed some sandwiches. We decided if we would like a ham, cheese or jam sandwich. We wrote some instruction on how to make sandwiches – making sure we used our time words at the beginning of each instruction. We then followed out instructions to make our sandwiches before having a picnic in the garden.

This week we have been writing some stories. We read Goldilocks and the three bears the. We then read Goldilocks and the three Dinosaurs. We decided to write our own stories about Goldilocks. Some of us even read them to reception.

We have been learning about plants and what they need to grow. We planted some flowers. We have been making sure we water them every day and we have put them near the window so they can get lots of sun. They have started to grow, we can't wait to see how tall they grow! We have also been learning about the different parts of plants and what important job each part has. We created our own flowers and labelled them.

This week in PE, we practiced catching and throwing balls. We practiced throwing them in the air to catch them. Then we practiced throwing them to our friends. We had a competition to see who can throw and catch the ball the most. Well done to Alanah and Charlie who were our winners. They managed to throw the ball 20 times to each other!

In English, we were very lucky to have Mrs Davies read us our new story. She read us The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We looked at the structure of the story and talked about the days of the week. We worked together to order the parts of the story and the different days of the week. We then wrote our own diary entry from the view of the hungry caterpillar, making sure we used capital letters for the days of the week.

This week in year 1 we have been looking at making equal groups in our maths jobs. We used woodland animals to help us make groups. We made sure the groups were equal before we counted in 2s, 5s or 10s.

This week in year 1 we have been looking at more and less of numbers to 50. We have been talking about tens and ones, deciding if we need to use the tens or ones to help us fine the most and least.

During our afternoon craft activities, we have been making some Easter crafts. We have had a colouring competition, colouring an Easter egg. We made sure we took our time and didn’t colour out of the lines. We have also been decorating some Easter eggs and making our Easter cards. We can’t wait to show our final pieces!

We have had a great time since coming back to school. We continued our topic of ‘Wonderful Winter’ by reading the story ‘The Littlest Yak’. This was the story about a brave Yak who wanted to be big, but realised her smallness was very important to her. She sent us a letter asking us to make her a new hat because she had lost hers. So we worked on designing her a new hat that she would love. We have been working very hard in maths to practise our numbers to 50 and recognise the tens and ones in the numbers.

Maths

In maths we have been looking at numbers to 20. We have ordered the numbers to 20 and then looked at tens and ones. We used dienes to make numbers to 20. We have compared numbers to 20 finding out which is the most and which is the least.

Our bodies

We have been looking at our bodies. We labelled the parts of the body we can see and then looked at the parts we cannot see. We talked about the jobs of our body and why they are important.

Castles and Dragons

In year one we have been learning all about castles and dragons. We have looked at castles and discussed what it would be like to live in a castle. We labelled parts of a castle before designing our own. We learned about cross hatching and used the technique to colour a castle. We have been practising using rulers to make sure our lines are straight.

Space

In year one we have been learning all about space. We have read the story Winnie in Space. We looked at describing words to describe Winnie and Wilbur. Ask us to tell you some of our amazing describing words we thought of.

We have been looking at different space facts. We looked at the different planets and ordered them. We have learnt about Neil Armstrong and watched the amazing video of when he first landed on the moon. We thought about what it would be like to be an astronaut, talking about what food they eat and how they would sleep. We made some astronaut food to eat just like astronauts do in space! It was DELICIOUS!

This week we have started reading My Pet Star, about a little girl who finds a star that has fallen from the sky. We have ordered the pictures of the story and thought of some more amazing describing words to describe the pet star.

This Is Us!

Since coming back to school, we have been looking at the topic ‘This is us’. We have read Ruby’s worry, Meesha makes Friends and Ravi’s Roar. We talked about what we can do if we have a worry and who to talk to. As a class, we discussed what makes a good friend and what to do if we see a friend who is lonely.

We have been looking at the artist Frida Kahlo. We looked at her portraits and discussed which ones we liked best and which ones we didn’t like so much. We liked her painting called ‘The Frame’ so we decided to create our own. Keep a look out on Free Flow to see our finished art work.

When we came into school on Monday we noticed something strange in our classrooms. Someone has left us some underpants and a new story! Keep a lookout on Free Flow and the school website to see what exciting things we get up to!

Year 1 2019/20

Science, Recycling and ‘Right’s Respecting’

After hearing about climate change and how much it is affecting us, we decided to explore ways in which we can help the environment by recycling and reusing materials. We found out that trainers can be made from recycled plastic bottles, so we decided to explore other recyclable materials that could be used to make trainers before we designed our very own pair.

Our Lever Design Book

As we said we would, we have included some photos of our lever design book based on the story called, ‘The Girl Who Went to the Arctic’. We had so much fun designing, making and evaluating our levers.

Trampolining

We had a fantastic morning practising our trampolining skills, as well as our running and multi-skills. We have been continuing to practise our skills using equipment when outside in the playground.

The Girl Who Went to the Arctic

To introduce our topic, we read the story ‘The Girl Who Went to the Arctic’. In the story, the girl explored the Arctic, met different Arctic animals and even encountered an Inuit.

We loved finding out that The North Pole is in the Arctic and so we wrote Santa letters to ask him questions about the Arctic.

We have also been learning all about the United Kingdom, including the four countries that it is made up of and facts, such as, the name of the longest river and the tallest mountain in the UK. We have also learnt about the seven continents and five oceans in our world and was interested to learn that the Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean.

Our Lever Design Book

We have been designing a new book for other children to read. We explored different books and decided that we found books most fun when they are pop ups and have levers. We decided that we were going to make our own book about the Arctic, using levers. We will show you photos of our finished book soon!

Dragon in School

We found footage of a dragon who had been in our school playground and quickly came up with ideas as to how we could see him again. We decided to make some ‘dragon food’, using some of the dragon’s favourite ingredients and left it overnight and in the morning, it was gone! We wrote a set of instructions about how to make ‘dragon food’ in case anybody else wanted to know.

We have yet to see him again and we still are unsure as to what he is doing in our playground. We think that he might have lost his knight and so we are writing a ‘Wanted’ poster in search of the knight.

Multi- skills

We had a fantastic morning at the sports centre, practising our multi- skills with children from other schools. We practised our jumping, hopping, skipping, running, throwing and dribbling.

Dragon and Castles Homework

As you all know, we love continuing our learning from school on at home. This is only a few examples of the fantastic homework that we have done so far. Can you guess what they are?

Hylton Castle

We have had such a busy start to Autumn Term 2. As part of our topic, we had the knights from Hylton Castle in to tell us all about what it was like to live in Hylton Castle hundreds of years ago. We even had a banquet where the Lord and Lady and their family sat at the top of the table.

Measuring Madness

In maths, we have gone measuring mad! We found a letter from Dippy the Dragon, asking us to measure different lengths of sticks in our school garden to help him build a den for his family. We have been using words, such as, longer and shorter and longest and shortest.

Remembrance Day

We learned all about why we wear a poppy on Remembrance Day and then decorated our own poppy to make a class poppy wreath. We explored mixing black and white to red paint to change the shade of the colour and used dabs of a cotton bud to paint.

Anti- bullying Week

As part of ‘Anti- bullying Week’, we wore odd socks. We have also written a recipe as to what makes a good friend, including things such as, helpfulness and kindness.

Our Super Space Ships

We have been busy making space ships by using different materials, such as, plastic cups and paper plates and have used different techniques, such as, painting, cutting, tearing, folding and ripping.

Learning at Home

We have also been doing some fantastic learning at home. We have made different space models using recyclable materials and have made a moon diary by looking at the changes of the moon over a week.

Aliens Love Underpants

In the past two weeks, we have been learning about the story ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ and so, of course, we collaged our own underpants in art, using the skill of tearing, ripping and cutting.

Playground Games

We have been talking a lot about the importance of how we play in the playground with our friends. Together, we came up with different playground game ideas and practised these together. Maybe you could play some at home!

Into Space

We have loved the start of our time in Year 1 so far and we have been so busy. As part of our ‘Space Topic’, we have been learning about the story ‘Whatever Next’. We have also designed our own rockets to go to the moon and have even made our own astronaut food in a bag so that it wouldn’t float if we were in space. In maths, we have been helping the aliens read, write and order numbers.
