Year 4 Gallery & Work 21/22

For our art lesson this week we were looking at the artist John Constable. We focused on sketching pictures of Hadrian’s Wall in the style of his work. The children then enjoyed painting them using watercolours.

In topic this week we have been continuing to look at the Romans in history. This week we have focused on Queen Boudicca and have completed some research into who she was and why she was important during the Roman era. After doing this research, the children completed a wanted poster on her.

In year 4 this week we have been completing different activities for anti-bullying week. The children have been taking part in kindness bingo. In each box on their sheet they had to write a kind act they could complete this week in school and how they could be kind to someone in school. When they complete this, the children can tick it off. We have been looking for children with complete bingo cards to win prizes.

In PSHE, we have focused on recognising different feelings and emotions and strategies for dealing with these. It was a good opportunity for us to discuss our own feelings and emotions and how these can change over time.

In maths, we have been looking at written methods for subtracting 4-digit numbers and have solved some tricky problems.

This week in year 4 we have been linking local history to the Romans by studying Hadrian’s Wall. We  began by sketching Hadrian’s Wall in the Style of artist John Constable.  We have also located Hadrian’s wall on a map and found out some interesting facts about why it was built.

In P.E. we have been learning how to play hockey. We began by looking at how to correctly hold a hockey stick and by discussing the rules of the sport. We practised how to control the ball by dribbling around different areas of the sports hall. After this, the children had lots of fun playing a race game at the end which focused around dribbling.

This week in Year 4, we have been continuing to learn about the Romans. We have been looking at the armour the Roman’s wore and have had lots of fun designing our own helmet.

In history, we have been looking at what life was like for a Roman solider. We found out what was required of men, who applied for the job. We produced some fantastic Roman solider job adverts.

This week we have been working hard to write our diary entries as a Roman solider. We have been working on, including powerful vocabulary in our writing and thinking about how a Roman solider would have felt on their journey into battle.

In English, we have been working very hard since returning to school to take on the role of a Roman solider. We have been identifying features of a diary and discovering what life was like for a Roman soldier. We have been working especially hard to include adjectives and are looking forward to drafting our first piece of writing.

In maths, we have been learning about the place value of numbers and how to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We have been using our reasoning skills and applying our knowledge to solve some tricky problems.

As part of our PSHE topic, we have been discussing what makes a great friend and how important friendship can be. We have also been looking at strategies to handle conflict and we had some brilliant discussions about how to resolve disagreements.
